Balloon Sinuplasty: Relief from Chronic Sinusitis

Patients who are suffering from chronic sinusitis - swelling of the nasal passages with soggy eyes and throbbing headache, recurrent or that lasts for eight weeks - can now be relieved with a minimally invasive procedure with little or almost no blood loss.

Through balloon sinuplasty, a slender and bendable guide wire with a tiny balloon is inserted into the nostrils up to the blocked passageways. Under general anesthesia, the small balloon is inflated to dilate the passageway. It is then deflated and withdrawn. The soft and thin bones in the sinus drain are broken down with no pain. After the procedure, the sinuses become wider and the normal drainage and function of the affected sinuses are restored.

Because there is no cutting involved, there is very little blood loss, and patients recover quickly. Compared to traditional sinus surgery - which involves cutting away tissues and taking several hours to perform - balloon sinuplasty is faster and safer to complete.

This procedure will provide relief to approximately 32 million Americans suffering from chronic sinusitis. After the procedure, they can go back to work the following day.
