Sleep Apnea: Not Breathing While You Sleep

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is diagnosed when breathing slows or stops for a significant period of time multiple times throughout the night. Your airway obstructs, you don’t get enough air and oxygen, and you definitely do not get a restful sleep! Obstructive sleep apnea IS a medical problem. OSA can lead to other medical conditions such as: high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, acid reflux, stroke and other heart and lung problems.

Other symptoms include fatigue and sleepiness during the day, dozing off at work or school, lack of concentration, morning headaches, snoring and waking frequently in the middle of the night. The sleep apnea diagnosis is made after you have a sleep study, which is performed either at a sleep center or at home with a home sleep test. Sleep studies can also evaluate oxygen levels, heart rate, and other factors that can affect the quality of one's sleep, such as restless leg syndrome.
